Gurudwara Sri Hemkund Sahib is one of the highest and most revered Sikh shrines in the world, situated in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, at an elevation of roughly 4,329 meters (14,200 feet). The holy site is built alongside a pristine glacial lake and surrounded by seven snow-clad mountain peaks.
The Trek and Route
- Starting Point: The pilgrimage/trek begins from Govindghat, which is located on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway.
- Ghangaria: Pilgrims first trek 13 km from Govindghat to the base camp village of Ghangaria (Gobind Dham), which offers basic accommodations and acts as a gateway for the nearby [Valley of Flowers National Park].Â
- Final Ascent: From Ghangaria, it is a steep, 6-kilometer stone-paved climb (a 1,100-meter ascent) to the shrine itself.
- No Overnight Stays: Camping or staying overnight at Hemkund Sahib is not permitted. Pilgrims typically start early in the morning and return to Ghangaria by the afternoon
